12.04.09ISD TRUSTEES VOTE DOWN CESAR CHAVEZ HOLIDAY
Irving school distric board turned down a school calendar change that would have added the day off in 2011. Some trustees spoke of their concerns that the March 28th holiday would come too close to a battery of state-mandated math tests. One Arlington resident also objected to honoring the Hispanic labor leader and civil rights activist, pointing out that students and staff don't get a holiday for Veterans Day. The Cesar Chavez day would have replaced an Arlington school holiday in May that used to be in honor of Cinco de Mayor but is now just generically named the May Holiday. Arlington would have been the only school district in North Texas, and maybe the whole state, to give a holiday in honor of Chavez.
